Most WhatsApp catalog failures are a publishing state, a stale app or a personal-number mix-up. Here is the order to check them in.
You added the products, hit publish, and sent the link. Then a customer says “it is not opening” or “I cannot see anything”. Before you rebuild the catalog, work through these six causes in order. Most failures are a state problem, not a broken account.
1. You are looking at two different things
The catalog inside WhatsApp Business and a shareable catalog link are separate surfaces. The first lives behind your business profile and only opens inside WhatsApp. The second is a web page that works in any browser. If you shared a profile link and the customer is not on WhatsApp Business, they may see nothing useful. Decide which one you meant to share, then test that one.
2. The store or the products are still drafts
A published store with unpublished products looks empty. Check both levels: the store status and each product status. In MyShp, nothing is public until you publish, and a draft store returns a not-found page to anyone who is not the owner. Publish the store, then check that the products you expect are live.
3. The WhatsApp Business catalog was never created
Adding a business profile does not automatically create a catalog. In the WhatsApp Business app, open Settings → Business tools → Catalog, then add your first item. If that menu is missing, confirm you are in the Business app, not the personal app, and that the account is not restricted.
4. The app is stale or the cache is lying
Update WhatsApp Business from the app store, force-close it, and reopen the catalog. If the product still shows an old price, wait a few minutes and refresh again. Testing on the same device that made the change is the most common reason a change looks like it did not apply.
5. The number is personal, restricted or new
- Personal number: catalogs belong to WhatsApp Business accounts. Move the shop to a business number before troubleshooting further.
- New or unverified account: some features unlock gradually. Complete the profile and verify the business where the app asks you to.
- Restricted account: if messaging or catalog tools are limited, check for an in-app notice. A restriction is an account issue, not a catalog issue.
6. You hit a platform limit
The WhatsApp catalog holds up to 500 items, and the Business API allows one catalog per WhatsApp Business Account. If you are near the cap, new products may not appear. The workaround is not another WhatsApp catalog; it is a hosted catalog link with no item cap. See the 500-product limit explained for the migration path.
A 60-second test that saves an hour
- Open your catalog link in a private browser window while signed out.
- Open it on a second phone that is not connected to your account.
- Check the store status and one product status in the dashboard.
- Ask one customer to reply with a screenshot if it still fails.
If the private window works, the problem is the customer’s app or the wrong link. If it fails, the problem is publishing state. That single test tells you which half of the checklist to continue with.
A hosted catalog removes most of these failure modes: one link, works in any browser, updates live and has no 500-item ceiling. Create a catalog link and keep WhatsApp for the conversation, where it is strongest. If you are still deciding between the two surfaces, read WhatsApp Business catalog vs a catalog link.
Frequently asked questions
The catalog only appears when the account is a WhatsApp Business account, at least one product is published, and the catalog was created inside the app. If you set the catalog up on a personal account or left every item as a draft, customers see an empty profile.
